Wong Mei Xin’s inspiring story is one that embodies our school’s mission to cultivate lifelong learners. A former top IGCSE scorer and now a law student at ATC Law School, Malaysia. A Journey Through REAL Schools
Reflecting on her five years at REAL Schools Johor Bahru, Mei Xin described her time as “quiet and peaceful.” However, the transition from primary school wasn’t easy, especially since half of her time was spent studying online due to Covid-19.
One of her most memorable moments was participating in the annual Sports Day, where she enjoyed cheering for her classmates. Another highlight was the Haunted House event, a unique experience she took part in during her final year at school.
A Holistic Approach to Growth
REAL Schools’ holistic approach not only pushed Mei Xin academically but also nurtured her personal growth. She admitted that before joining REAL, her English skills weren’t strong, and she had a habit of procrastinating, even with exam preparations.
“At first, it was difficult to adapt, but over time, I changed my bad habits,” she shared. Thanks to the support of her teachers and the encouraging environment, she transformed into a disciplined student, which led her to become one of the school’s top IGCSE scorers.
Mei Xin is particularly grateful for the teachers she met during her journey at REAL Schools, as they played a significant role in her personal and academic development. She expressed her appreciation for her ICT teachers, who nurtured her love for the subject. “I was never good with computers, but after learning multiple new skills, ICT became a subject I truly enjoyed,” she said, emphasizing how much fun she had exploring new technologies.
Extracurricular Achievements
Outside of academics, Mei Xin was an active member of the Girl Guides and Archery clubs. Through these activities, she developed practical skills such as cooking, first aid, and camping. She also achieved a personal milestone in archery, when her coach selected her to showcase her skills during REAL Schools’ Open Day. These experiences taught her leadership and teamwork, contributing to her personal growth.
Mei Xin fondly recalled the Christmas celebrations at REAL Schools. As a Year 10 student, she served as an ambassador and assisted with stage lighting during the primary school performances. Watching the event from the lighting control room gave her a unique perspective on the performance, and she enjoyed the responsibility of helping teachers manage the event.
How REAL Schools Prepared Her for Law School
When asked how REAL Schools prepared her for her future studies, Mei Xin shared that the curriculum instilled in her a sense of discipline and curiosity. “I learned to take ownership of my education, which has helped me tremendously in my law studies,” she explained. Her decision to pursue law was influenced by her interest in legal cases, which started when she was in Year 9. “Law has always been something I wanted to learn more about. It’s fun to read cases and understand the law,” she said.
Currently pursuing her Foundation in Law at ATC Law School, Mei Xin plans to continue her studies toward a law degree. Her goal is to become a lawyer and help others in need, a passion she hopes to fulfill by continuing her legal education. Despite the challenges of adjusting to a new environment and making friends with students from different backgrounds, Mei Xin has embraced her university life, using the skills she gained at REAL Schools to adapt and thrive.
A Bright Future Ahead
Her advice for current students is simple yet powerful: “In the beginning, it might be hard, but you’ll slowly get used to it. We can have fun, but it’s also important to be serious when it’s time to study. Nothing is too difficult if you put in the effort.”
Her story is a reminder that REAL Schools not only prepares students for academic success but also equips them with the life skills needed to excel in their future endeavors. We are incredibly proud of Wong Mei Xin and look forward to seeing her achieve her dreams.
