At just 18, Natasha
Zulaikha Muhammad Razif is already turning heads with her academic
achievements. With 9 A’s in SPM and a place at the University of Nottingham to
study Mechanical Engineering, Natasha’s story is more than just about her
personal drive. It’s a testament to the strength of family support and
determination.
For Natasha, excelling in her exams wasn’t just about
academics it was personal. “When I got 5 A’s and 1 B in my UPSR, I was
devastated. It felt like I’d let myself down,” she admits. That B represented
more than just a grade. It was a reflection of how the family’s move to Johor
Bahru, just two months before her UPSR, had affected her. “I couldn’t help but
blame myself, and I definitely felt the stress of moving so close to the exam,”
she recalls
Her mother, Dr. Rusyainie, reflects on that
difficult time. “When we moved from Penang to Johor Bahru, it was tough for
Natasha. Her father was already working in Singapore, and the transition wasn’t
easy for her. But she was always determined. When SPM came around, she saw it
as her chance to redeem herself, and she did.”
Despite the pressure, Natasha thrived. Her time at REAL Schools in Johor Bahru was marked by continuous academic growth. “The teachers
were always approachable,” she says. “Even when I asked the simplest questions,
they never made me feel inadequate, and that really boosted my confidence.”
Her mother recalls how Natasha’s dedication stood out.
"Every year, she was on stage collecting academic awards. REAL School’s
environment nurtured her, and I believe that played a big role in her
success."
But her journey wasn’t without challenges. When Dr.
Rusyainie was promoted at work, Natasha had to take on more responsibilities at
home. “I wasn’t around much,” admits Dr. Rusyainie. “She had to look after her
younger brother, Thorique, and still managed to stay on top of her studies. I’m
incredibly proud of her for that.”
Though Natasha considers herself introverted, she managed to
find her footing at school. “I didn’t make friends easily, but my classmates
were kind and supportive,” she says. Through it all, her family remained her
constant pillar of strength.
“We’re beyond proud of her,” her mother says. “Natasha’s a
great role model for her brother, Thorique, who just scored 7 A’s in his IGCSE.
They push each other to do better, and it’s inspiring to watch.”
Natasha’s time at REAL Schools didn’t just prepare her academically, It shaped her as a
person. “I joined a lot of clubs, but the cooking club was my favorite. We got
to use the school kitchen, and that was always fun,” she laughs. “I also loved
the cultural celebrations, especially with such a diverse student body. That’s
why I chose Nottingham, because of the international community.”
Her mother adds, “Moving to REAL in Johor Bahru wasn’t easy for Natasha, but it taught her resilience. She faced challenges, but they helped shape who she is today.”
Now, Natasha is on a new adventure, studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia. “I wasn’t there for most of her SPM year because of work, and I regret that. But her success was all hers – pure hard work and determination,” says Dr. Rusyainie with pride.
Advice
When asked what advice she would give to current REAL students, Natasha keeps it simple: “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Balance
your academic and social life. Both are important in shaping who you become.”
From a parent’s perspective, Dr. Rusyainie adds, “Support
your children, but also give them the space to grow. Natasha’s journey taught
me that sometimes, stepping back is as important as being hands-on.”
Conclusion
Natasha Zulaikha’s journey is one of perseverance, growth,
and unwavering family support. From bouncing back after her UPSR to excelling
in SPM and now pursuing her dreams in engineering, she’s proven that setbacks
are just stepping stones to success. With her family by her side, the future
looks bright for Natasha – and this is just the beginning.
