It was a Saturday morning to spread goodwill and cheer as 60 Senior 5 students from R.E.A.L Schools, Suria Campus, Cheras visited two orphanages within the neighbouring area of Taman Cuepacs, Cheras – to spend some time and have fun with 31 orphans residing at two homes. The students also brought along with them gifts and donations for the children of Chrestus Home and Rainbow Orphanage.
The objective of these visits on 23 February 2013 was essentially to inculcate the values of benevolence, compassion, and generosity within the students. No matter how small it may seem, every single act of kindness towards a person or persons is one little step towards improving and demonstrating humanity.
At each orphanage, the Surian students’ agenda was identical – starting off with entertaining the children with a Gangnam Style and Harlem Snake performance, followed by playing water balloon games with them, having an informal ‘interview’ session and finally; presenting hampers, ang pows and other donations to the orphans and their homes. The relaxed and ‘off-the-cuff’ interview session in particular, allowed the children to ask our R.E.A.L students any questions they wanted, and vice versa.
It was indeed a touching, rewarding and enjoyable visit for the group of students who learnt that we can definitely change the world for the better each day with simple kindness. Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces and how their day was brightened by the fun activities and gifts was a priceless and fulfilling experience for the Surians. Indeed, such charitable visits to welfare homes epitomize the aim of Character Building, one the five ‘R.E.A.L Pillars of Life’ which is incorporated into the R.E.A.L Schools curriculum.
