RIS Shah Alam Goes ‘International’

The term ‘international education’ took on a whole new meaning when R.E.A.L International School, Shah Alam Campus hosted its annual ‘R.E.A.L International Day’ on 2 June 2016. Held yearly to celebrate the cultural diversity of the school community and to develop mutual respect and understanding among people from different backgrounds, the event is always a popular and eagerly-anticipated one for all.

2016_cahaya_internationalday02The air of festivity and celebration was palpable in the air as students, teachers and parents gathered at the school hall to immerse themselves in the unique history, culture, language and tradition of nine selected countries. Booths were set up to not only exhibit visually-stunning decorations and costumes to visitors, but also provide them with tantalizing foreign foods and fascinating facts on the nations of:

  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Germany
  • South Africa
  • Egypt
  • South Korea, and
  • Japan

R.E.A.L International Day 2016 kicked off with a show-stopping International Fashion Show which featured 61 student models who strutted down the ‘runway’ with style, poise and elegance. The show saw the appearance of famous national costumes such as the Japanese kimono and Korean hanbok, among others. It was interesting to note that in many cultures, these traditional garbs even serve as an indication of a person’s social, marital or religious status.

Following the show, the crowd flocked to each of the nine booths to get a taste of the various delectable delicacies and delightful activities on offer. Among the many attractions was a mummified, Egyptian-themed haunted house. Students excitedly made a beeline to enjoy a scare or two at the fun mansion. Famous locations such as Japan’s Mount Fuji and South Africa’s panoramic veld landscape were seen plastered and painted on booth backdrops, while historical landmarks such as Egypt’s Great Pyramids were also erected to inspire awe and amazement.

Finding similarities and common ground among each other’s differences was the main take-away from this year’s International Day. The teamwork, commitment and enthusiasm shown by the students were equally instrumental in ensuring the smooth running and success of the event; which gave foreign students an opportunity to introduce their respective home countries and rich, diverse cultures to their fellow Malaysian schoolmates and teachers. Always striving to provide world-class education, R.E.A.L International School has, for one day at least, allowed itself to ‘bring the world to the class’ instead.
