Earlier this year, Senior 4 and 5 students of R.E.A.L Schools National, Cheras Campus took part in the UCSI University Science and Maths Quiz 2016. This is the fourth consecutive year the university has hosted the event with the aim of promoting science and mathematics, as well as developing teamwork among students through the exchange of knowledge and skills. Moreover, this event offers an effective platform for participants to forge new friendships with other students from across the nation.
Upon registration, the quiz master proceeded to brief the contestants who consisted of students from 15 different schools. They were then separated into 75 teams and tested on four subjects, namely:
- Chemistry, and
Within 60 minutes, every team was required to answer a written test comprising 60 multiple-choice questions. Once completed, each participant was then required to sit for an individual written test.
The USCI University Science and Maths Quiz is divided into State and National Level Challenge in which students who qualified from the State Challenge would then be invited to participate in the National Level Challenge later on in the year. Among the many outcomes of the quiz is the development of students’ self-esteem. As the quiz is only open to Form 4 and 5 students, participation gives students some exposure or insight into university life just prior to them leaving school. This helps students to gain a certain measure of confidence towards making the right decisions for their future.
Furthermore, the mechanics of the quiz in which students have to work in teams and solve problems within a given time limit, go a long way in teaching them time management and communication skills. More importantly, it helps them to better understand themselves and what they would like to pursue after finishing school. With this experience, it is hoped that our students are more aware of their true potential and talents as they set out in carving their future pathways by selecting a suitable field of study.
