CURRICULUM WITH ADDED DEPTH AND SUBSTANCE
All private national schools under R.E.A.L adhere to the national-level curriculums set and approved by the Ministry of Education, Malaysia. Besides emphasizing on traditional core subjects, we develop our students holistically to be independent and self-motivated learners by integrating an active learning approach into the primary and secondary school’s syllabus along with various unique experiences.
We add depth and substance to our curriculum by strongly enhancing it with selected elements from the Singapore education syllabus; especially in the subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. By enhancing the quality of the core curriculum, our students are able to improve and strengthen their standards to be comparable with those of world standing.
Although the medium of instruction is Bahasa Malaysia, we place equal emphasis on both English and Mandarin proficiency by making them compulsory subjects across all levels. Our students are well-equipped with linguistic competencies required for entrance to universities, as well as to sit for the HSK test – China’s only standardized test of Chinese language proficiency for foreign students.
We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities and enrichment programmes to ensure that our students not only excel academically, but also attain an all-embracing form of sound education. This includes foreign student exchange programmes, leadership camps, Lego & Robotics, Fashion Design and Speech & Drama, to name but a few. Our teachers and staff work together to provide the expertise and support needed for our students’ overall well-being and success.
DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMME (DLP)
In accordance with the Ministry of Education’s ‘Empowering Bahasa Malaysia and Strengthening English’ policy, the Dual Language Programme (DLP) has been initiated at selected Malaysian primary and secondary schools beginning this year. A total of 300 schools, including R.E.A.L Schools, are now qualified to offer the DLP pilot programme which officially commenced in January 2016.
With that, all R.E.A.L Schools National have the option of conducting teaching and learning Science and Mathematics in either English or Bahasa Malaysia. For R.E.A.L Schools, only Junior 1 and 4 students from National Primary level (at all campuses) and Senior 1 students from National Secondary level (selected campuses only) are eligible to undergo this pilot programme.
Among the criteria set for schools seeking approval to run the DLP include:
- School must have sufficient resources and support to implement the programme
- The school’s achievements in Bahasa Malaysia would have to be on par or better than the national average
DLP aims to provide more opportunities and better platforms for students to enhance their English language proficiency. By strengthening bilingual fluency, the DLP provides students with life-relevant skills that enable them to compete globally and improve their future career prospects.
We offer Primary and Secondary school curricula that prepare our students for the same public examinations as those taken by their government school counterparts but with enhanced learning experiences.
- Term 1: January – May
- Term 2: June – November
Early Years : Preschool
Ages : 3 – 6
Our preschools follow a programme that incorporates the active learning approach of Multiple Intelligences (MI) with national and international elements. These two curricula are linked and cross-referenced to provide the best possible progression of each child’s learning.
Here, we recognize that every child is different and brings a unique combination of experience, attitude and aptitude to school. The combination of careful assessment of an individual, along with our teachers’ knowledge of appropriate teaching practice, allows us to educate young children extraordinarily well.
We focus on child-centered learning with a balance of focused tasks and child-initiated activities. As such, many interesting programmes such as Culinary Art, Cambridge English, Public Speaking, Swimming and Gymnastics have been incorporated to be part of our preschool teaching. To further enable seamless transition into Primary level, additional options also are given to students for both English and Mandarin medium.
- Term 1: January – June
- Term 2: July – December
Primary Junior : 1 – 6
Ages : 7 – 12
Primary education in Malaysia begins at age 7 and lasts for six years. The curriculum is based on the KSSR (Kurriculum Standard Sekolah Rendah) which has been introduced from 2011 onwards.
The Primary years are the foundation upon which all future schooling is built. Our programme essentially emphasizes on the development of balance education. Students begin to experience a wider range of interaction through field trips and integrated learning such as LEGO education and swimming. More importantly, their character makeup is being shaped at this crucial, early stage.
Though Bahasa Malaysia is the medium of instruction across all levels, we weigh English and Mandarin as equally important subjects. These languages are essential and taught comprehensively to build students’ strong language and literacy foundations. Students will be prepared for the UPSR (Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah) examination upon completion of their Primary education.
- Term 1: January – June
- Term 2: July – December
Secondary : Senior 1 – 5
Ages : 13 – 17
The curriculum adopted is an integrated one for our Secondary schools. The academic curriculum and pastoral care support are designed to provide seamless opportunities for students to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes essential for successful entry into tertiary education at both local and overseas institutions. It also allows students to follow a chosen academic and career pathway, to eventually become productive global citizens.
R.E.A.L Schools provide a world of opportunities for all students. There are numerous and varied opportunities for students to learn and become involved in activities outside the classroom. We continue to emphasize on both English and Mandarin on top of Bahasa Malaysia. In order to meet the demand for competitiveness, we maintain the teaching of both Science and Mathematics in English. Students also have the option of taking Cambridge IGCSE English at selected campuses should they be interested.
Lower Secondary level (Senior 1 – 3) commences from age 13, covering a period of three years where students will take the PT3 (Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3) or Lower Secondary Evaluation. Meanwhile, our Upper Secondary level (Senior 4 & 5) prepares students for the SPM examination (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) conducted by the Malaysian Examination Syndicate at the end of Form 5.
