‘Hi-5’ is a popular Australian children’s television series which stars the musical group by the same name. Known for its rich and versatile educational content, the programme is exclusively designed for preschool children featuring five performers who educate and entertain through music, dance and play. The episodes are bookended with a ‘Song of the Week’, a pop-style feature which corresponds with the weekly theme and sets an educational topic for the week’s episodes.
With this in mind, 58 students from Key Stage One of R.E.A.L International School, Johor Bahru Campus and Primary One of the campus’ Sekolah Seri Cahaya, got the opportunity to participate in the LIVE recording of ‘Hi-5 Season 17’ on 9 March 2017. The filming took place at Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios at Persiaran Layar Perak in Nusajaya, Johor.
The Pinewood Studios Group has an impressive heritage and has helped produce some of the most successful feature films and TV shows ever made; with movies like ‘Doctor Strange’, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ counting as some of its more recent credits. Malaysia holds the honour of being one of only seven Pinewood studios in the world.
During filming, which lasted four hours, the Key Stage One students had the pleasure and privilege of joining the actual cast of Hi-5 in the recording of two Songs of the Week: namely Abracadabra and Hi-5 Dance Off. They had a wonderful time and enjoyed themselves tremendously learning the dance moves and lyrics of both songs. It was indeed a great experience for the students to be featured on this popular children’s show, of which many were fans themselves.
Such unique student experiences are part and parcel of R.E.A.L Schools’ continuous effort in providing enriching, balanced education. Beyond academic pursuits, this event offers students an avenue to breed confidence and creativity while exploring their interests or talents in music and dance. It also exposed them to the world of film and broadcasting, thus expanding their horizons in the process.
