Maintaining good personal hygiene or cleanliness is a habit that should be taught and instilled at a very young age. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Hygiene refers to conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases”. Maintaining good personal hygiene involves bathing regularly, trimming your nails, flossing your teeth and wearing clean clothes.
Cultivating a healthy lifestyle is part and parcel of R.E.A.L education where imparting lifelong skills, practical knowledge and building exemplary character values are present. In line with this; R.E.A.L Schools, Cheras Campus organized an educational talk on practising good hygiene habits and menstruation. The talk, which was held early this year at the campus’ Hall of Character, was led by Ms. Azni Ibrahim from Kao Malaysia, who gave useful and fascinating insights into personal hygiene and menstruation. The informative session was attended by the Senior 1 and 2 girls, and was intended to create awareness amongst the female youth on the process of maturing or puberty.
The students were enlightened on the physical and biological changes that take place during one’s adolescent years, which includes the development of secondary sexual characteristics. Although some might consider the topic a sensitive subject matter, Ms. Azni handled the session professionally well. This helped put the students at ease, making them comfortable to ask questions and being engaged with the talk, which also included an instructional presentation on women’s personal care that deals with menstrual hygiene management.
Synonymous with one of R.E.A.L’s core values, Collaboration with Kao Malaysia proved to be impactful and mutually beneficial as students gained more than just knowledge and awareness of the human development process. The talk also went a long way towards building a respectful environment and healthy relationships amongst students. By understanding each other, these girls would be able to cope better with this drastic and rapid phase of their development by seeking support from their peers. Looking out or caring for one another and not just themselves, also reflects the core value of Character.
R.E.A.L Schools thanks Kao Malaysia for their efforts in conducting the fruitful awareness campaign. For the students, it is hoped that the talk had equipped them with the know-how and feelings of confidence, assurance and preparedness in dealing with this early stage of their youth, which can be potentially tricky and turbulent to some. At the same time, the practice of good personal hygiene is essential towards living a happy and healthy lifestyle, be it in school or at home.
