While academic excellence is important, R.E.A.L Schools places equal significance on students achieving merit in extracurricular involvement too. Outdoor excursions such as field trips and educational visits are often held to strike a balance between studies and extracurricular activities in order to cultivate a holistic approach towards R.E.A.L Education.
On the 19th and 20th February 2016, R.E.A.L Schools, Shah Alam Campus was the campground for the school’s Kadet Bomba to host its annual camping trip. 41 Kadet Bomba members accompanied by three teachers all came geared and ready to set up their tents for the two-day camp. Its prime objective was to engender the Kadet members with credible leadership skills. In addition, this yearly outdoor event is aimed at building character and improving physical and mental endurance. Through camping, cadets are able to gain vital knowledge, skills and exposure such as ‘night firefighting’.
On the campsite, participants were divided into two platoons:
- Platoon Alfa 1 and 2, and
- Platoon Bravo 1 and 2
An assortment of activities, competitions and performances occupied the three-day camp itinerary. To assess basic camping and wilderness survival skills such as setting up tents and rescuing injured victims, participants were given extensive training involving firefighting and rescuing drowning victims. These drills simulated real-life situations for the cadets to experience while familiarizing themselves with real equipment and materials. Such practical learning platforms are synonymous with active learning – which forms the bedrock or foundation of R.E.A.L’s educational philosophy.
Exhibiting experiential learning at its best, the host of hands-on activities was not limited to tough training and drills; with an exciting cook-off and barbeque also organized to inject a dose of fun into the event. One of the camp’s highlights however, was a captivating cultural show and ‘Penglipur Lara’ performance by students to cap off a tiring but thoroughly enjoyable outing. In recognition of outstanding efforts, prizes were presented to the Best Platoon, Best Male Cadet and Best Female Cadet.
R.E.A.L Schools constantly strives to offer educational experiences that are fun, useful and go beyond the norm. The latest edition of the Kadet Bomba camp is a prime example of such initiatives, offering students valuable opportunities to acquire new, lifelong skills.
