It was a memorable week for teachers and students of R.E.A.L Schools National, Cheras Campus as ‘The Festival of Language and Literature’ kicked off earlier this year. The Department of Bahasa Melayu organised the event to appreciate the national language through various activities and competitions at the school.
The festival is held annually with the aim to promote and cultivate the usage of Bahasa Melayu among students in both verbal and non-verbal ways, be it inside or outside the classroom. Besides that, the festival focuses on planting the seeds of interest in Bahasa Melayu literature such as poetry and novels. The theme of this year’s festival was ‘Murni Bahasa Lestari Budaya’, which highlights the importance of language in reflecting one’s culture.
As one of the core values of R.E.A.L Education Group, we regard Communication as a vital aspect in enhancing students’ learning experience. A large part of this effort is language mastery, as it gives students the appropriate boost of confidence to use language as a tool to represent and express themselves eloquently. Solid communication skills do not only benefit students’ academic performance, but positively affect their development of soft skills as well.
The learning of Bahasa Melayu literature or better known as Komsas, is a component of the subject in Malaysian schools that is instilled through ‘Creative Models’ and mestamu. This is where students have the chance to showcase their poetry-writing skills and creativity which revolves around the concepts and ideas of Bahasa Melayu literature.
Every year, participation in the festival’s competitions is made compulsory to all students in every class. This is to ensure that every student is able to benefit from the unique learning experience the festival offers. The competition results also reflected the students’ effort to achieve the best, not only for themselves but also for their classmates in the true spirit of shared learning.
Besides competitions, the Department of Bahasa Melayu also provided a slot for students from each class to set up fascinating Bahasa Melayu-themed exhibition sales booths that managed to attract and educate visitors while enriching the students’ entrepreneurial skills.
Similar to previous editions, this year’s language and literature festival was a remarkable success. Aside from elevating the standard of Bahasa Melayu amongst the younger generation, this endeavour takes into account our mission to transform lives in every community through learning and to leave behind a life-changing impact in everything we do.
