True to tradition, the Senior section of R.E.A.L Schools National, Cheras Campus or Sekolah Seri Suria, held its annual ‘Prefects Installation Day’ earlier this year. Approximately 600 students and teachers witnessed the election of the school’s new batch of prefects as well as the re-installation of existing ones. Akin to rallying the troops for the challenges that lies ahead, ‘We are Warriors’ was chosen as the theme for this year’s ceremony. It also encapsulates the importance of a prefect in upholding the rules and regulations of a school as well as maintaining order and discipline within the student community.
The event gloriously kicked off with a procession by the Prefects’ Body led by the Head Prefect and Assistant Head Prefects. With pride and spirit, they saluted the cheering crowd as they marched their way on stage and duly lined up in flawless formation. The singing of the National Anthem was then swiftly followed by the oath-taking ceremony, during which the new prefects pledged to always perform their best and be exemplary student leaders to their fellow schoolmates.
The duties and responsibilities entrusted upon a prefect are aplenty, being the custodians of a school’s rules and code of conduct. More than just students in different school uniforms, prefects also tend to represent the best of their peers as well as the school’s image. They are role models and counselors to other students, exhibiting a wide range of positive attributes, many of which revolve around R.E.A.L’s 5C core values of Character, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking and Creativity. Moreover, school prefects are always needed to work together with teachers in maintaining the effectiveness and smooth running of all events pertaining to the school.
During the ceremony, Mr. Yu Weng Hong, Principal of the Senior Section of R.E.A.L Schools National, Cheras Campus delivered a short speech but one that proved to be a source of inspiration and strength to the newly-appointed prefects. Each of them then received their official installation scrolls but perhaps the most eagerly anticipated moment was to come when the following appointments were announced:
- Head Prefect – H’ng Kher Yin
- Assistant Head Prefects – Rachel Chin and Amirul
The event came to a fitting conclusion when it was capped by a captivating performance by the entire Prefects Board which tied up the theme of the day, ‘We Are Warriors’.
