A ‘Green’ Sports Carnival Day

It was that eagerly-anticipated time of the year again when the community of R.E.A.L Schools, Cheras Campus come together to organize and celebrate its annual Sports Carnival. This year’s outing however, marks the maiden collaboration between the campus’ R.E.A.L Schools National (or Sekolah Seri Suria) and R.E.A.L International School (RIS). This simply added to the atmosphere of the event which was held in April this year; an occasion when students come proudly clad in the colours of their respective Houses of Red, Blue, Green and Yellow; ready to give their all for a fun sporting cause.

MAIN-PIC-II_resizedWith this year’s theme involving famous cartoons, each House had the opportunity to show off their creative skills by parading what was arguably the main attraction of the carnival – the House mascots. They came in the form of famous characters such as The Incredibles, Smurfs, Minions and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. No prizes for guessing which characters represented which House! To the students’ and teachers’ credit, both their booth decorations and mascot costumes were made mostly out of recyclable items. This went a long way in spreading the ‘Go Green’ environmental message amongst both students and visitors alike.

Upon the arrival of the VIPs, parents and guests, the opening ceremony got underway with the singing of the national anthem and a sports pledge read out by the school’s Head Prefect. The event was then officially opened by Vice President of R.E.A.L Education Group (Group Corporate Resources), Mr. Kenny Sim. Proceedings continued swiftly with a riveting march past by the school’s various uniform bodies and four House teams. These were then followed by captivating performances by the school band and cheerleading teams from each House. The students’ spirited display and competitiveness were palpable and one can only imagine the hours and effort spent in rehearsing their routines to perfection.

MAIN-PIC-IV_resizedThe fun and festivities continued with the main programme items of the day; which were the Junior-Senior-RIS Telematch, the Swimming Gala and Tug-of-War. The Tug-of-War was the event’s fitting finale as it stole the show with a display of strategy, strength and spirit. Competition was very close amongst all teams with even the VIPs getting in on the action! The energy and enthusiasm were contagious as spectators supported and spurred the competitors on as they gave it their all in the hand-burning, blood-pumping challenge.

On the athletics front, trials and qualifiers for certain field events began weeks prior to the carnival proper. These included the high jump, shot put, 100-metre sprint and 4 x 100 metres, to name a few. The prize-giving ceremony then concluded the event; which saw trophies being presented to Houses adjudged to have the best march past, best booth decoration and best cheerleading team. The biggest win of the day however, belonged to Green House as they were crowned ‘Overall Champions’.

In the end, it was truly an enjoyable event for all. In line with R.E.A.L Schools’ philosophy of promoting an active, balanced and healthy lifestyle from a young age, excellent extracurricular efforts such as this one form part of R.E.A.L Schools’ many proud, time-honoured traditions. With lots of action on show and several sporting talents unearthed along the way, the annual sports carnival is also one of the most ideal platforms to foster creativity and teamwork within the school community.
